Mr Toad was delighted with the place
and ordered a complete renovation to his lack of taste!
With so much timber and in 1/24th
scale the initial task was daunting, but with Radio 2 blasting in the background I stained the timbers carefully with a dark
oak stain! In fact I was a glutton for punishment and did them twice to get the right colour.
Next I painted in between the timbers
with a cream colour. There was slight bleeding of the stain but the shading added to the authenticity. Once dry
and after several coats, I finished off with a tea dye varnish to age the property.
The biggest problem I always find, is to choose
the use for the rooms. Staircases in......or out???? Decisions decisions. I spent a long time talking myself
out of the initial plans only to return to them in the end!
At this time of diary chat, the ground floor will host the kitchen, a large
hallway, the first floor, dining room and sitting room, the next floor study and bedroom and then the attics a spare room
and a hoarding place for all the equipment Toad has collected over the years from his endless activities!!! Of course
all this could change as the house takes on its own identity.
I painted the kitchen walls a cream colour, then
I added veneer strips to form a timber cladding effect, then coated them with tea dye varnish and then re-hung the door.
I used toothpicks to form bars at the interior window. They work really well.
Now I have to plan the kitchen to facilitate hiding wires so that the outside stays uncluttered.
